A year or so ago I came across Print Mafia's 2004 Melvins poster featuring the heavily doodled Dorothy image from "The Wizard of Oz." I loved it instantly and eventually acquired one. It's a simple two-color print. The doodling is rough, suggesting satanic themes, and subverts a classic film icon in a manner that's both arresting and humorous at the same time. A classic.
But, it's also rather unique in style compared to the rest of the huge PM catalog. And this thought set me looking for other examples like it.
I found a handful of similar PM prints and decided to catalog them here for your interest and, perhaps, reference. I call them "doodled triptychs" for pretty obvious reasons. First, the images are frequently (though not always) composed in triptych form, recalling religious icons. Second, unlike many PM images, these prominently feature heavy hand-drawn manipulation of the familiar Xerox'd images often seen in PM designs.
You can call them whatever you want. Enjoy.
