First time at Flatstock - recommendations

the way I see it is like this; if you're willing to fly from 1/2 way across the country or world to come to austin and you're not willing to drive 45 minutes to eat the best food available of it's kind......you might as well have just stayed where you were at, saved the money, and went to chick-fil-a.

Stubbs: Doesn't even rate. Historic place though. Great music. Go for the vibe, not the food.
Saltlick: The #1 most overrated BBQ in Austin. It's barely OK. The country atmosphere is nice though.
Rudy's: They have decent BBQ. But, I wouldn't call it top notch. I mean, the BBQ sauce is factory made with HFCS in it. It is a chain.

Saltlick: that is your opinion, but I still think it is one of the best, pretty easily.
Rudy's: also true. It is a chain, nothing special.

And I've hit up 3/4 other locations you've mentioned, and they're great - but I still say Salt Lick is the way to go if you're an out-of-towner.

See I think Rudy's is the best. It's one of 'last meal' places. If you are going to be there a few days, try a few different places.

To be totally practical though - I've been to SXSW for 4 years now, and I never have enough time to drive out of Austin proper. Different people have different schedules, but with film you can see 4-5 movies a day pretty easily, and there's really no time for going elsewhere. If you can get a few hours aside though, they're right - head a bit out of town.

But if you're like me and want BBQ close-by, Iron Works is the way to go as it is literally a 3-minute walk from the convention center (where Flatstock is held). Quality isn't bad either.

For other restaurants only 5-10 minutes from downtown:
- Homeslice: my favorite pizza in Austin, I live quite close to it.
- Gueros: right across the street, pricey for the food quality but the atmosphere is great. (this area is the S. Congress strip, which is nice to walk if you're with your lady - lots of interesting stores, etc.)
- Juan in a Million: awesome Mexican breakfast. Best hangover cure in Austin.
- Chuy's: the first in a Texas chain of Tex-mex. Mexican Martini is delicious, and if you like this style of food its one of the best.
- P. Terry's: great fast food hamburger that won't leave you feeling gross. Great veggie burger too, very fast, "healthier."
- Hut's Hamburgers: for a sit-down burger.

There are a lot more of course... those are off the top of my head. And of course if you're not from Austin, stop by the Alamo S. Lamar, as that is where Mondo's located.

So, in that way, perhaps you are right.

The Austin chowhound board is pretty active. It is worth perusing for tips.

JoJo / redbear, if all of those are the short fat chicks, where are the hot ones? I'm genuinely curious where you guys frequent, I'm S. Austin and I don't explore too far from my own backyard, but if you guys have some good suggestions I'd be excited to try.

the only place I'll eat while I'm in Austin is las Minutas and Curras.

other than that, I do like the original Chuey's during the chili festival month/s.

I will certainly eat in Lockhart.....at kreutz's and/or the other joint across the street.

I might also eat some kolaches from that dumpy gas station near La Grange.

Other than that, I'll be in Houston......and I'll probably eat at Ninfa's and/or some seafood joint. Or, we might just smoke our own meat.
