Installation of The Museum of Modern Art's Tim Burton exhibition. Opens November 22 and runs through April 26.

I went Saturday afternoon. The amount of stuff on display was awesome -- hundreds of pieces -- and though there was necessarily a lot of movie props and concept work and all that, the exhibit did a pretty good job of being an actual artistic retrospective instead of a "collection of neat fudge." Cool stuff from his early years, lots of screwy watercolor illustrations that kind of place him somewhere between Edward Gorey and Sergio Aragones, sculpture, models, etc. Also, lots of stuff was included that he didn't physically create, like props and Art Department concept work, since in the role of Producer or Director it really becomes about your vision more than your handicraft. And that was appreciated, lended some modern context.

The only complaints? WAAAAY too crowded, it sells out well in advance so they pack a lot of people in there, too many. And that jerkoff with the top hat and the tape recorder needed a smack in the face. Other than that, GREAT show.

What mistersmith said, but I'd like to add that the art students standing in front of the display cases sketching Jack Skellington were really drymounting annoying. Other than that, an amazing collection!

I was there this weekend. Very nice collection of paintings/illustrations, sculpture, stop-motion models, video, costumes and props. Way cool but way too crowded. Anyone interested in architecture and design should also check out the Bauhaus exhibit on the top floor.
