Always get a receipt.
that implies one has the time to wait in line at a post office.
They just installed a scan-it-yourself desk at my main PO. Gives a receipt. I haven’t yet tested if that receipt works for ‘start of insurance’ but I think it does work for ebay seller stats.

Well hot damn. I'd love that.

I'm still firmly in the "drop off at loading dock in gated lot and cross fingers" crew. Getting a receipt is far too much time and effort considering the extremely low % of packages I send that have an unexpected delay or are damaged. Averaging about 25 packages a day outgoing with USPS since the new year. I ship a fair amount of stuff so one issue a month is nothing for me, but 1 issue when you send 1 package is going to be a really big deal and to you the USPS appears to be an utter failure.

My specific complaints aside, USPS still delivers 95% of what I send on time
Agreed. Plus, they have never lost something I've shipped.

The others are not worth the upcharge to me.
What about damage and rough handling tho? Who do you consider most reliable.
USPS far and away the leader in reliability both in regards to delivery time and package handling for me vs UPS. Anyone that sends a tube with UPS has a death wish for its contents. I don't have enough experience with FedEx on either end to form an opinion.
Agree. I've received a few things via FedEx where I was surprised the contents were not damaged based on the outside of the tube.

The DIY kiosk at the post office I went to today had a sign saying it now has the ability to "scan" prepaid labels. Have to manually enter in the tracking number (at least dats what it appeared), but it still saves a ton of fuggin time vs. waiting in line.

You have to manually enter the tracking number? That can't be right

Maybe the scanner was broken? ¯Quite possibly user error as well. \_(ツ)_/¯

Getting warmer there blue.. hopefully the scanner will appear.. on normal computers, an easy thing to add.
they even put a bottle of hand sanitizer next to mine--true government service.

used it yesterday over lunch, had to announce what i was doing so the 10 people in line didn't dogface me even harder when i was in and out in 1 minute.

I used to drop off prepaid packages at the counter... If looks could kill. I just want to shake everyone standing in line by the shoulders and scream "WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY"

Now a bit of good news. USPS now has a 10 year plan to improve.

While it may be easier for Biden to move DeJoy out, the process is still neither easy nor certain

Oof. Didn't realize the postmaster was such a cushy/secure job. No wonder duke hasn't resigned.
