I recently acquired an Obey print that was only ever distributed framed (floated). It's a standard screenprint on the current speckletone paper.

After taking it out of the frame, I noticed the top edge of the print is adhered directly to the backing mat rather than being hinged. Most of the print is loose, it's just a couple very small spots of adhesive along the top, from what I can tell. I'd like to separate the paper from the board but don't want to risk tearing the paper, if possible, since the print is otherwise in perfect condition.

Does anybody have experience removing this kind of mount? I'm considering just taking it to a local conservator but wanted to know if this process is simpler than I thought.

Henry: No, but I seem to feel better when they're not around.

Take it to a conservator if it has any real value. If it is a couple hundred in value...just carefully pull that fudge loose.

It’s an unreleased print that I doubt I could replace easily, if at all. So I’m leaning towards conservator. The only way I’d do it myself is if I’m missing something that could make it relatively easy - but it seems that’s not the case.

Eh, the print was only ever released in this way, I don’t see it as a big deal.

No telling what kind of adhesive was used. That makes it difficult to offer suggestions. If you know who framed them...call 'em.

This will likely release it from the mat or do nothing. Just start on the lowest setting and see what happens. Once you have it off the mat you can figure out what to do with the stains

“What’s the print?” seems to be the more relevant question.
