Also Downward is my favorite release in quite some time.

Ha, most action this thread has seen in weeks, and it's about anything but the art. lol

You guys do know that Shep drymounting LOVES flippers, right? Sure, he claims to be against it and even does a few things to minimally cut down on flipping, but the bottom line is that HIS bottom line improves with every successful flip. Leads to him being able to charge more and more for future releases. Kinda similar to how he rails against the current political system and claims to be pro-environment and yet he continues to ship everything via Uline, a company that supports all the politicians and policies Shep supposedly hates. So yeah, him leaving Shopify, or really changing anything at all about his current amazingly successful model, will never happen.
Same with just about every artist
Yeah, but he doesn't charge market for most of his releases. I'd doubt that the run of the mill releases do much at all for his bottom line in comparison the the fine art, large format and clothing. Now an argument can be made that selling the first editions below market drive interest and pricing in the fine art. Frankly that market is saturated with the lesser images reselling for cost or below (i,e. album cover hpms)

Luls. Poors buying prints to flip for Olive Garden monies have nothing the do with the #fineart market. This goes for every artist.

I didn't say they did. I was trying to say that the flipping could drive interest for those in the fine art market. $50 print flipping for $500 could influence what a baller might pay for the HPM or canvas.

Ok all good comments , oh yea, Shep needs the flippers.
, what if the last obey drop “Paint it Black “ was a 24hour time release drop like James Jean does
and the price was $250 +ship ,tax. (Instead of $80. Ed of 450
How many would buy it for full mkt price with no potential flip ? 450? Nah

Answer; just look how many $900 LF prints languishing the the obey store, with not much flip potential..

If Fairey did a time release for a popular letterpress at $80 i bet he would sell a helluva lot more than 450. He was definitely off on the market price of the large format. Should have been $500, if that.

Nobody makes prints like James does. Nobody.

Notice that James never reveals the printer but we all know who it is....

just to be clear - i dont mean open editions

what i stated, dont annouce the edition size and make some 800 some 400 etc - by varying the edition size it wouldnt be that hard to measure the outcomes with time.

if the mass flippers dont know what to expect the outcome would be they would purchase less

maybe we another government regulatory agency?

I think the large format prices were spot on. 80% of the 30 images released are sold out and the 6 that remain probably only have 20-30 left (so maybe 150 left of 2600). To me selling out, but not quickly, means you priced at market. Kinda like Faile.

I'm curious to see what is in store for OBEY in 2020... hopefully more 24" x 36" editions.
me too

looking back on 2019 it's hard not to be a little disappointed in the lack of new imagery. The Large Format releases are fun but could have spread them out over a few years
