If this were the case, then why were people able to cart it and initiate checkout as opposed to getting the normal 'inventory issues' screen?

because when all was said and done the posters sold there was no chance for such a screen to pop, if you were to look at the analytics the variant sold out fast; people didn't have these in carts for long. The 10 minute frame still applies. I incline people to ask mondo, feel free to put me on blast if I'm wrong I don't give a fudge lol if mondo did get rid of cart hold then I expect so much more butthurt in this thread in coming months... can't even imagine how fast the jock hot fuzz print will go.

Just to add: This is correct, made it to payment page with var and waited to see if a bud needed it. Checked main page and saw sold out. Although I didn't attempt to check out afterwards, just know when it says sold out, its sold out. So I left it at that.
