Paramount was obsessed with giving away tickets to the premiere at SDCC this summer. It seemed like every local radio station, bank, and news outlet had a pair of tickets to giveaway.

Beyond was a blast, chemistry between the cast finally feeling like it should, Justin Lin style action, was silly at times but was hella fun.

Star Trek just works better as a tv show than a movie series. Most fans of the show, any iteration of the show, will point out that the best episodes are smaller in scale and more hard sci-fi in scope, and character development for the entire crew is best when you can dedicate an hour or two of a season to it. That said, I enjoyed Beyond - the threat didn't feel as heavy or grand but getting crew interactions and demonstrations of competence (and even the somewhat ridiculous solution to a major problem) was a plus.

Agreed, and yup, Beyond felt more like episodic storytelling, esp in terms of character development and interaction.

Actually thought Star Trek (2009) was a really great film, definitely my favorite of the bunch.

I was kind of whatever about the newest Star Trek. It wasn't bad or anything, it just didn't grab me and it kind of felt like more of the same. I saw it after returning from vacation a few weeks after it came out and the reviews and word of mouth may have raised expectations a bit. I like the 2009 film. Into Darkness was a fun watch in the theater, but I was never compelled to watch it again for some reason. I remember the big reveal was easy to spot in advance and didn't pay off like they intended it to. Some of the visual effects in the new one felt lackluster. You know that, 'hide the details in smoke and blur it with fast camera movements look.' I saw it on a day when I was catching up on movies I had missed. That day I also saw: Southside with You (pretty good), Ghostbusters (annoying waste of time), Bad Moms (okay, better than expected and funnier than Ghostbusters), Captain Fantastic (enjoyed this quite a bit up until the ending), and Hunt for the Wilderpeople (hellafun, best movie of the day.) Beyond was rather forgettable but passed the time.
