Fine-tip Sharpies or sharp colored pencils. I actually prefer smaller coloring areas (recently started coloring with wifey and daughter, we love it.)

Yeah, these adult coloring books are a racket, man! They cost like $10-15, when you can buy kid's coloring books for just a few bucks. Sure, there is more ink involved in printing the more intricate designs, but not THAT much more. Pure profiteering methinks!
