I completely blame Lucas's lack of actual directing skills on how bad the PT are. He was WAY to focused on the special effects and the acting ultimately ended up being atrocious, which is hard when you have the likes of Neeson, McGregor, Jackson, Portman, and Christopher Lee supplementing the other established SW actors. Sure they all had a few decent moments, and Neeson & McDiarmid were pretty good throughout, but all in all, the really bad acting is what really killed it all for me personally.

for real though, i just watched a few episodes of the clone war cartoons and it really comes home to roost, that the Jedi are leading an army of slaves and have pressed child soldiers into service and the separatists are just looking for political autonomy from a demonstrably corrupt government. so really what makes the Jedi the good guys?
