Detail of an incredible handcrafted glass piece by @davesmithartist an absolute master of his craft and a true English gentleman dedicated to keeping the dead arts alive. I asked Dave to describe the process of creating this version of my Black Osprey logo and he had this to say... "The piece was first hand drawn from your original design. I then enlarged it and made a reverse sketch, the glass was cut and then polished. I covered the entire piece in a sandblast resist, this material withstands abrasive aluminium oxide being fired at it. After hand cutting the design onto the glass I can add some of the details with white wood workers glue, this glue withstands the blasting for a while and then breaks down leaving texture and unsaved ridges and bumps. The work is then clear coated several times to bring back the clarity of glass. Various shades of genuine gold leaf are then added -12, 16, 18, and 24crt gold leaf. This is done with the water gilding method and using gelatine. Once all the gold is applied the piece is burnished with cotton wool to give a lustre brightness to the gold. It is then backed with black enamel." I highly recommend visiting Dave's website at davidadriansmith.com where you will tumble into a gilded rabbit hole of inspiration and wonder.
