it's been requested that I ship a rather large print flat.

18 x 38.

any suggestions or guides as to follow?

That would work. The more firm cardboard you can add inside the box to keep it rigid, the better.

Skip the box...get a sheet of this at HomeDepot and make a sandwich for the exterior. I've seen PosterMountian use it...the stuff is pretty rigid. Or put this inside a box if you want to go the extra mile.

Gallery in NY that wants a MBW print by chance? Had the same request on something last year...after purchase.

I agree with that above, but with a caveat...

I shipped a print flat this way once, with 2 sheets of cardboard sandwiching the print in the center, and 1 sheet on the outsides of it all, and STILL had damage due to a box corner going through one side and dinging the print.

If you want to 100% have something make it, build a crate.

I've added thin sheets of plywood before, but nothing this big.

I a thin piece of plywood for $3 at your local hardware, and get it cut to size

[ply] [foamcore] [print] [foamcore] [ply] + lots of FRAGILE stickers

You will also want to use something to hold the print in place.... I have used a combination of spacers and formcare in the past.

Just bring it to UPS or Box Brothers. Have them pack the print for you flat for a fee paid for by the buyer. Insta-insurance coverage for however much you declare it for if it gets lost or damaged in transit.

I've done the plywood route on the outside. As you mentioned, foamcore, corner tabs on the inside.
