I love Horkey and am almost as quick to slurp all his work as others but this is very detailed, hard to read, muddy and barely coherent to me. MEH

Moving my attempt at art discussion to the proper thread...

It's interesting to see the higher levels of contrast on this one compared to TT and ROTK - much sharper separation between the blacker and whiter elements. Wonder what hidden details are in the dark...

I was really hoping for a Shire scene here. I thought it would be interesting to see to serenity of the Shire, then the impending war of Merry and Pippin atop Treebeard, and the ultimate conflict depicted in Return of the King. This looks pretty great in some ways, but we've seen this scene interpreted ad nauseam.

As much as I debate whether RotK works as a movie poster, at least it was a new and more creative interpretation.

Agreed. I have no doubt it will be incredible to study in person, but I really expected a Shire-centric print; one that would lend itself to a variant printed on dark, forest-green paper.

This also took me awhile to figure out the orientation; I first thought we were looking down on the climactic moment from above, but then I realized that didn't work , with respect to where Gandalf is on the stone bridge. I can see it now, but it was a little disorienting at first, especially with the brightness obscuring his face.

Nonetheless, incredible artwork as usual and a fine way to close out the series.

I really would have liked to have seen him do the Black Rider/s

Though I think that scene has it's fair share of depicitons as well..not nearly as much..though.

The main thing that has me a bit O_o is the the dark light emitting from Gandalf's staff in the variant. For some reason a lack of brightness coming from the staff just bugs the nerd in me.

Yeah. But if this is anything like TT, the metallics will be crazy, so there may be a shimmery effect there around the staff which could be just as cool.

I'm really surprised so many people thought HORKEY would do a shire print. It just doesn't seem to fit his style and historical output at all. The only thing I ever thought it MIGHT be other than the balrog was the watcher in the water (which would have been nearly as cool IMO)
