Taiwan, where the Nationalist government established its Republic of China after 1949, remains an important problem for the communist People's Republic. Beijing insist that there is only one China and that Taiwan is a rebellious province that has to be brought back under its rule. This can be accomplished with military force or through negotiations. For a long time, posters featuring Taiwan have attempted to portray the Taiwanese as victims of (American) suppression that needed to be liberated. Recently, the chances that the Taiwan question can be resolved peacefully have improved.
