2nd Annual Art of the Year Contest
Hey I think this is just as cool the 2nd time around...thanks again to all who put in the effort to make both the contest, and more importantly the site possible!
I also echo the sentiment that a separate art print vs. gig poster voting would be a little more appropriate, although ART of the year sounds a bit more distinguished than Art PRINT of the year, or Gig Poster of the Year...

Thanks, Brendan...just for clarity...in order to qualify it simply had to have been printed in 2007 AND nominated PotW?[/b]Yamar wrote:If you (or someone else) never nominated it, it won't make the end of the year cut. It's a reason that I try and change my pick every other week at most.

Am I correct in presuming each member is permitted to vote only once?

Good post. Well thought out and stated.mistersmith wrote:Nobody cares about my opinion, but...
I ended up with Horkey Boris. Something about that poster, it seems to just have turned gigposter-ing on its ass. You can barely even read the text, which oughta be pretty important, and nobody would have used those colors before - not for a heavy rock band. And it's 35" x 16"...tall. WTF. It broke every rule, but still works.
And it's fvcking beautiful.
I think there was better "art" - I think McCarthy did something special for printmaking in general with Everything/Nothing - but hey, Horkey/Boris just punched me in the gut. And that's how I hope everyone is voting.
Plus no matter how great some of that work is, it just doesn't do anything for me - I never liked Emek (to hippie-tech), Fairey, Banksy (neither of those guys does anything new or deep ~anymore), or Danger (always seems goth/emo to me), so that took out like 60% of the nominees right there

i would also agree that art prints and gig posters should be separate categories if possible. some very different criteria for judging the effectiveness of each, if you ask me. don't mean that to be critical - i appreciate the site and all the work that goes into these things. just thought i'd chime in.

About 40 less than last year, but we tightened the constraint to a minimum of two votes to qualify this year. This flushes out A LOT of posters that were just liked enough by one person only to get nominated. It would have been 618 prints with last year's rule.
I must have substantially different tastes than the majority of folks nominating (which is fine.) I only saw a couple posters there that I really liked, and maybe only one or two that I would have nominated for AotW. Most of what I saw go by struck me as art prints, or fancy-shmancy overwrought pieces for bands I don't go for. Actually made the voting pretty easy for me though!
