Artist Edition are purchased directly from the artist. They are usually part of the artist's payment for designing the poster. The artist gets a certain number/percentage to sell. It's sometimes just the last 50 of the show edition or sometimes a separately numbered series. All the posters are printed at the same time, they are just divided between those shipped to the show and the ones shipped to the artist. Some artists print the posters themselves and may use a different paper stock for their edition.
The main and most important difference is that show edition 'survived' being purchased at the show and all that comes with that (the merch table, carried around during the show, taken home and stored safely). An artist copy just survived (or didn't) the US mail.
