People can be nasty. Glad you were able to make it out in one piece.
Indeed. I would not trade away any of my experiences for any others. But these days I certainly would not put myself in harm's way for someone else's stuff. And I absolutely pay more attention to the vibe check when I'm among many other people.

Wise advice.

Harrowing.

The Netflix doc was super thin I thought. They tried to push the thing as just a failed attempt at recreating Woodstock without ever talking about Altamont, which was like a mirror of '99. Lang was delusional and his buddy I think is a criminal.

The attempts at making the thing a #metoo or BLM issue were pretty weak as well (though, to be fair the social commentators weren't adamant about it). Not that there wasn't any of either (Kid Rock), but the acute problem wasn't misogyny and racism. It was a failure to read the room in terms of who was going to show up. You drop a pile of 21 year-old white dudes into a 99% male heavy music situation with zero security/infrastructure and you're getting a Lord of the Flies situation every time. Throw in Fred Durst blatantly inciting a riot and...

Which I guess was the point of the doc. Still!
just a foil for me today, thanks

Check out the one on HBO, it must be that one that didn't pull any punches. I watched them both at around the same time so I'm definitely having a hard time remembering which was which. I just know that one seemed like a fluff piece for the promotors and the other was straight up chilling to the bone.

I'll never forget what an exploding propane tank sounds like

I actually had my picture in a local newspaper article while the event was taking place. A friend of mine saved half a dozen copies and gave them to me, but they have been lost to time and moving to a dozen different places since. I found the article online but there aren't any pictures. Gotta get to a local library and pull the microfiche! Unfortunately I'm all the way across the country these days. This conversation has really reignited my interest in reaching out to the producer of the HBO doc so I might just do that. I never took pictures of my own until about 2005 so it's always interesting to dig them up where I can find them. Thanks for chatting with me about it dudes, I think I will actually do something because of it!

Netflix was the 3 part doc that included the van rolling into the rave. I'll have to check out the HBO version. Thanks for the first hand account, ygolohcysp.
Wanda: I can't stand people. I hate them. Do you hate them?
Henry: No, but I seem to feel better when they're not around.

Ha so I had it backwards all along, thank you! My arm hair still stands on end thinking about that buzz that you could PHYSICALLY FEEL in the air. Adrenaline was definitely pumping. Seems insane to think I put my body in the front of someone else's fudge that I never even talked to again. I also had a couple of friends that were there but not working with us make their way to our booth and take up sticks and guard positions. Crazy stuff
