Yeah but herbs don't want the books discussed just in case they decide to read the books, which is crap anyway since if they were interested in reading the books they would have read the books already.

Not really. Just cuz the show is #pastdabooks doesn't mean that there aren't details from the books that they can still include in the show at a later time.

So, what's the deal with the chains on the bookshelves. I originally thought all the books were chained and the maesters had keys by virtue of their studies, but the scenes with Sam putting books back don't show him locking them back up.

I read up on chained libraries after E1 (thanks socks). It used to be a thing. The books were chained to the shelves and the chains were long enough so that the books could be taken to tables and read. The whole part with Sam putting books back on the shelves and stealing books to read under the covers makes no sense. But I'll go with it. At least it gives him a break from all the poop.
