The latest fervor for all things Akira on here has indicated this film/franchise deserves its own dedicated thread.

Again, this thread is for all things pertaining to this classic anime, be it the latest merchandise, art print discussion or even the supposed US film...

The pinnacle of Akira screen prints seems to be Stouts MMM labor of love:

Tyler:
It’s just one of those movies that I’ve loved since I was a kid. I remember seeing the dubbed version on TV many, many years ago and then seeking it out on VHS, then DVD etc. I had two Akira shirts in high school and I wore them until they fell apart. It just had such a unique voice and vision and at the time it was the greatest animated film I had ever seen. It’s still up there with the best of them.

When you’re working with something as great as Akira you really have to try hard to screw it up, plus I stuck close to the illustrations by the creator Katsuhiro Otomo. In the end it felt more like I was the designer, just working with somone else’s artwork. All compliments are due to Mr. Otomo, not myself. I only started it about 2 weeks before the event due to procrastination on my part and other jobs.

Gianmarco Magnani aka Silence TV, seems to be running a close second with his minimalist design and nice use of negative space:

The upcoming Craig Drake piece is also generating some buzz, it's a really dynamic composition and feels like a cel from the film:

I'll let the experts weigh on the rest of the prints and anything else they feel worthy of mention... 8)

A Totoro post is more deserving.

Totoro is equally deserving. But the rest of the EB members deserve to have me shut up about Akira in other threads even MORE.
This is my ' 5 minute time-out' thread ;)
And i'm gonna like living here fulltime!

I saw Akira in the theater when it came out. Other than finding it enjoyable, I don't remember a thing about it and I haven't seen it since then.

Whilst i'm in full-on geekout, here is a comparison between Katsuhiro Otomo's original b&w artwork as originally released, and the American release colorized by Steve Orliff and overseen by Katsuhiro Otomo
Akira was the first American comic to be entirely colored using computers, and a very experimental exercise at the time.
Orliff is currently selling the covers he hand-colored through his website http://olyoptics.com

I got 3 days ISS for convinving my 8th grade teacher Akira was an appropriate choice for movie day. The clown rape was frowned upon, but the ingesting of pills by the handful got me pulled out of the classroom.

I adore the Iaccarino. Just picked up the giclee. At the moment it is my 3rd favorite print, behind Stout and the new Drake.
Though the style and execution is obviously not up to the Stout beast, i consider them perfect partners, since the Stout is all referencing the film, whilst That Kid Who Draws used purely the comics as his source, hence the prominence of child Akira from page 330/331 of book 6 in the middle left of the piece. Great to see the Caretaker robot too. A really cool print, despite the cgi take on characters and slightly 'off' coloring on the bike. Pity the paper is so thin, though.
Overall,a great job,IMO.

Regarding the Silence TV: my dvd player is screwed, but could somebody please check & confirm that Akira was developed/released by "akira production committee" and not Akira Committe Production (as written on print).
I dig the print, but i am sure that is an error and not how it is creditted in the film. Its putting me off pulling the trigger at the mo,really bugs me.
But i could be wrong.
Someone check please!

Edit: after checking a version on youtube,i stand corrected .
I'm sure my old VHS said different though, but never mind. More importantly,i really really need to own the Silence TV now!
