Really enjoyed being an admin on this commission. 17 colors, plus a b&w keyline variant. 100 Simpsons easter eggs/references, run of 82 regs (the year the Akira manga debuted) and 20 variants. The artist waived his fee, instead donating all remaining proceeds after it prints to the two charities affiliated with the Bartkira project (Save The Children/OISCA)

Edit: Ugh, database remote linking broken?

Ripped off Stout down to the numbers at the bottom. Luls.

And he's being sent a copy or two because he saw it and loved it - big fan of Simpsons/Akira/Bartkira (and proud of his Akira print/composition, of course)
Is the composition derived from Stout's? Of course it is.
But it was reworked with a whole lot of thought as to references/placement that i feel pushes it past being a simplistic Stout ripoff (though you're totally entitled to feel that way)
Really it was a sort of natural progression - inspired by the acclaimed Simpsons/Akira mashup project 'Bartkira' that saw two of the most successful animation franchises amalgamated and hundreds of artists redraw the entire 2500 pages of manga.
With Akira arguably a pinnacle of cinematic animation, The Simpsons leading the way for decades on TV and the Stout representing the best Akira piece, it made sense to combine the three to create a high quality Bartkira screenprint.
No point in doing things half-assed and the bottom numbers are integral to the Stout so homage was paid to that detail too.
Also nobody is profiting from the sale except two charities, which i feel raises this above the usual commission shenanigans. Just a fun labour-of-love piece referencing 3 of a lot of peoples' favorite things, the production of which will help many more beneficiaries of the charities they rely on for support.
I know it's gonna draw some hate, that's to be expected. The group members and a few other parties love it though, so i'll take that.

I feel like an idiot for asking but I'd rather put away any false hope...
There's no way to get ahold of one of these for a Joe schmo like me right?

Something from Ash Thorp happening very soon. 13 days until the reveal. Not sure if print-related or some kind of short film/animation.

I'm gonna regret spreading the word when i die on the drop, but.....
http://www.felixcomicart.com/newsdetail.asp?nId=325
If anyone is in the market for hand-colored original artwork from the colorized international Marvel/Epic release of Akira, there's a new drop of over 200 Steve Oliff pieces coming soon - also including pages from Katsuhiro Otomo (who sent coloring suggestions to Steve to implement) which are so rare it's ridiculous.
Aside from the importance of Akira as a text, the computerized colorization was a pioneering achievement of its own, as the systems used were in their infancy and never applied to comic production. I believe a few proprietary programs were created just to get the job done - so the OG color-test sheets used are doubly significant.
