Before computers and the internet people had to do things by hand on paper with faxes and such. Think of how much time that wasted. Computers and the internet increased the speed with which businesses can conduct business. Therefore the speed we gained by moving to computers has freed up time for poster drops and we maintained as good or better yet productivity compared to the times before computers. Could we do better? Sure, but that's what robots are for, right?

why would you EVER expect an artist (or anyone other than an incredibly close friend for that matter) to mark the value down on customs forms?

If they are willing to do it, usually you don't even have to ask...they just do it.
