Weird. It's like Cuyler Smith hasn't been doing portraits for a few years.

If it were from the noes down I would give it to ya.

But its not.

At least it isn't a whole gallery show of this.

I'm sure Mike will recover somehow.

Mike, just do a movie portrait gallery show at G1988, invite Cuyler an pee on the doorstep. Claim your territory!

BTW, I love Cuyler's cut shorts and it's cool to see him do stuff that includes eyes.

Cuyler has a style, and these portraits are in keeping with it. I feel the fact that we are debating if someone owns "profile portraits" as an artist-owned-style is lame. If another artist did portraits only from the nose down, then THAT would be ripping a brand. JLU's are a brand. Those are all unique designs. I am a HUGE fan of both artists and own numerous pieces by both, and while I see the opposing side of this, I don't see this as ill-intended. I get that there is crossover with Mike's Marvel Portraits show, but instead of making portraits taboo by anyone else, let's let the style of the artist make the difference. I see Cuyler's style in these portraits.

Moments like this can only push to make artists evolve their styles. Let's learn from it, and grow.

see i just don't see as much of cuyler's style in these as his past stuff. I don't like his portrait direction with these. the cut off at the eyes was a really cool series. I know a lot of people that are into those. The jimmy duggan baseball card print he jsut did for 1988 is another portrait type clearly not close to Mike's style.

I know a lot of people that saw the jpeg preview and thought mike had done them. .02

But I mark that up to coincidence in the similarities, which I understand not everyone will believe. A problem may be that they are masked. Cuyler has a knack for faces.
Example here are his profile portraits for Grand Budapest Hotel:

You don't look at these at see them as Mike's. Clearly Cuyler. Even if in color, they'd be Cuyler.

I think the similarity comes from the colored background. I'm not saying that's right or that only Mike is allowed to draw a face on a colored backgroung, but if these were on a white background, would people still be comparing them to MM?
