I would call that piece an anomaly in my collection, but mostly purchased because I enjoy the artists' body of work and found the image compelling.
for me at this point (though I hardly buy anymore), it's imagery first, band/film/whatever being advertised second. though I am more inclined to like things that also happen to have good bands on them.
only time this is wonky is when the piece features a band I actively hate -- cf. phish/DMB/linkin park

Taste is a funny old thing, I could post the same thread title about that Geddes guy that some people go nuts over...that fudge goes way over my head.
Personally, I've collected film posters (as in theatrical advertising posters) for about a decade and this screenprint scene is a nice little branch of that hobby.
From reading posts on here, it seems to have helped people seek out films they may not have seen, so that's a good thing I suppose. The stupid jumping and dumping from one hot (hyped) release to the next is obviously daft, but I think there are some genuinely classic posters that have come out of Mondo that will stand the test of time (not loads, but definitely a few).

Here's an amusing, though not maybe entirely accurate, comparison.
Some people like heavy metal music, and those people often express that enjoyment physically through headbanging and slamming into the guy next to them. And that's great, it's what you do to metal, it always has been and it always will be. But some people like expressing their joy for music through tapdancing, which is perfectly fine, but eventually, there are going to be tapdancers somewhere that also like heavy-ass guitar riffs and sick double bass. So someone, inevitably, will try and tapdance to Marduk or Ministry or Testament or god knows what, and everyone's gonna look and them and think, dude, what the hell, and they're gonna be like, screw it, I'm having a great time. And they'll be right, they're having a great time. But everyone else will still be like...why.
So when I see someone dropping serious cash on a drawing of the cast of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan or something, in my eyes they may as well be tapdancing to Kill 'Em All.
But I'm sure I do something that they think is stupid too.

Interesting thread...To the original question...it seems that there was a significant pent up demand for quality movie posters and only recently has that demand started to be met with a supply (although I would agree with those of you who cast aspersions on the "quality" of much of the movie poster art - as a collector there's a lot of stuff pumped out that I don't find particularly compelling, but that is partly a matter of taste, and on that topic, to each his own).
People love movies/TV just as they do music, so unsurprising that some people would like movie posters - from what I can gather there just weren't many being produced that had broad appeal until Mondo came along. And as to why all of these movie poster lovers seem to have taken over EB, that's not surprising at all - EB is simply a great place if you want to buy/sell (i.e., flip) some stuff or just educate yourself - for free!
Are movie posters a fad that will vanish just as quickly as they came? No, unlike pet rocks and Beanie Babies, movies will be around for some time as people have emotional attachments to them - so I suspect movie posters of the Mondo variety are here to stay, too. Does this movie poster thing feel like a bubble that will burst to a degree? Yes. Markets that have quick and sudden rises in demand and prices often have crashes or significant slides (recent housing market, early 2000s Internet stocks, Beanie Babies, mass produced baseball cards between 1985 and the late 90s). Note that all of these markets also were besieged by flippers and that's not a coincidence. (On a tangent, people often collect things for emotional or psychological reasons, whereas flippers buy them because they think they might be able to resell them for a profit - any time a market has a disproportionate share of flippers is a warning sign that prices are being propped up by people who don't necessarily find the item to have any intrinsic value, it is simply a means to an end, which seems to be to earn $2.35/hour after accounting for all the time and expenses - at some point prices can't be artificially propped up any longer).
Whether this movie poster thing is on the way up with a lot of room to run or about to crash, I have no idea. I just know that I'm only buying what I really like and I'm not raiding the kids' college fund to do it.
But I think movie posters are a good thing, even though I don't collect them, as it's keeping some gig posters cheap and more artists and art means more choices for all of us collectors for decorating our walls or stuffing our flat files.

on a related topic... in line with movie posters and pop culture... more and more there are these group gallery shows... it's been interesting to watch those start happening more and more, and to see the list of poster artists taking part. Over the past couple of years now... I continue to get email invites to participate in themed group gallery shows...seems to be happening more and more actually. They are always pop culture themed. I have participated in a one or two of these, and did agree to do one next year (but the theme is loosely pop culture and something I can work around), but normally I turn down the invite... just not my cup of tea. Some artists / collectors love it and can't get enough of it... to each their own.
It would be refreshing though if once and a while some gallery owner or art show curator put together a show not based on anything pop culture related. There's so many other things in this world then pop culture and it would be so great to see the list of artists that normally get asked to these shows and see what they create on their own... or what they create as a group when not limited to pre-existing imagery.
Skies the limit for whatever loosely based or very specific theme a show could have... could be as simple as a color scheme... everyone create whatever you want, it just has to be all blues... or something deeper... meaning of life fudge... life, love, death,... why are we here... or plant pornography... or animals in odd places... whatever... just something not based off tv or video games or movies or the internet... i think it's been proven that there is certainly an audience for the pop culture based art... and that's not necessarily going anywhere given we are all children of pop culture... so why not just have a few shows here and there based on something else...see what happens...
