Really? have you seen them? They we gorgeous. They're great now but they were better then.
I mean obviously they don't like exacty like paintings I obviously didn't mean that
Duh. I thought they were kinda "blurry" and washed out color-wise. They had a different finish than the Static prints for sure (which I presume is what you primarily like about them), but I feel like the Static prints are a more faithful reproduction.

pretty sure esao was printing them kinkos style in his apt and now he outsources it.
Wow. Honestly shocked so many people think that way. Okay maybe it's just me.
I really don't understand it though. Put prints like The Hiker, Murima's Tomb or Wino next to something like The Stray, Permanent Voyage or Monsoon - I just feel like it's no contest. The former 3 feels like you can tell they came out of a printer, the texture of the image area reflects the texture of the paper, while the latter all have their own textures in the ink separate from the paper - like how a painting would be.
To each their own I guess.

What is the ball park figure for commissioning pieces from artists? Never done it before but imagine it's a hefty sum. I notice you also have a number of Foley and Ruiz Burgos too. Do you just ask them at conventions for example or do you know them?

just email the artist and ask...that's my advice. it usually takes alot of money and even more patience.
It's bad etiquette for someone who has been given prices by an artist to reveal those prices publically. Just email and ask, he'll answer. I once emailed Esao many years ago and asked if he had a Joyride to Nettles Summit laying around that he'd like to sell. He replied back very quickly and said "sure". Got it for cost, too! Still hangs on my wall.
I can't say I've seen many old prints to compare...but Static is kind of the best in the game in terms of giclee printing and painting reproductions. I have seen the originals and prints for Cloisters and others from Gilded Age and they all look stunningly accurate to the real deal.

I have been collecting Esao's pieces for quite some time. There is a definite evolution in the printing, which I like. I tend to lean more like Thinker towards the older pieces, but it's partly nostalgic as it brings back memories of his early years when editions of 40 or 60 didn't sell out immediately. I do love some of his newer printings like Hugs and Cloisters and am lucky to also own an OG, Larundwell. As I look around at our home at all his pieces, I can see the evolution in his work based on the printing and his style. I would say that the pieces I have from 2005-2009 are generation 1; Early Static Medium pieces like Echinacea and The Stray also feel different from more recent Static Medium releases- Newer releases seem to have more sheen, like a varnish layer. I have no understanding of the printing so sorry for the layman's perspective!
