Fans in general expect their favorite artist to do shows in their backyard.philipanderson wrote:US fans would not fly to the UK to see their favourite US artist. They would expect to be able to see them in the US. Especially when that artist was cancelling work for shows in the UK.mobius006 wrote:Like the artist? In my opinion. And it is just that because some people will say that it doesn't matter that an artist is completely contemptuous of the country they come from. But I disagree.

Yes they do - you're quite right - making a distinction about US fans isn't particularly fair. But I have this feeling it will only be Americans telling us Brits to just jump on a plane and suck it up (from experience).jkw3000 wrote:

I really don't want it to come off that I would expect UK fans to travel here to the US.
My intention with my post was to offer another idea of spending money to reach the same goal (+other experiences). If he is entertaining the idea of spending $1500-$2500 on an OG online (5x $300-$500) why not do it in the best most exciting manner possible.
I don't personally have the money to do that kind of travel but I also would not spend 5x the amount on an OG. If those options were available to me I'd seek out as many as possible.
Obviously hard for each individuals life circumstance so don't knitpick please, just what I meant with my thoughts originally.

Just to clear up any confusion, I wasn't saying I would pay 5x the original cost to a flipper, rather quite the opposite, I would be happy to pick up an original work "at cost" but: (i) I don't have the spare cash to pay multiple times that amount and (ii) I have a problem generally with paying people several times the original cost simply because they were fortunate to have the relevant event in their own backyard or got lucky on a dropcutterbutter wrote:I really don't want it to come off that I would expect UK fans to travel here to the US.

I am not saying there is anything wrong with people buying to sell if that's what they want to do, I have bought things to trade them before myself, its just that paying someone say, $1,250 for something I know they paid $250 for a few days earlier would just leave a bad taste in the mouth and every time I looked at the picture it would annoy me - so no point in doing it (even if I had it going spare).
As a Brit I can certainly see that it would seem way cooler to me and way more exciting to hold a show in LA than anywhere over here, it was just the disappointment (acknowledging this is first world problem stuff here) of knowing that there is going to be yet another show by someone whose work I really like that is happening somewhere that I have no opportunity to attend - it would just be nice to see one of the big guns of this genre do something local (for once), especially those guys that are actually based here - after all its not like if someone like Olly did a show in the UK it wouldn't sell out (and I don't believe that its because no gallery or promoter has thought to ask - hell its not as though he would even need to be asked and couldn't just sort something himself given his current profile (or if he wants a hand I would be happy to sort things for the usual cut, I would even take payment in pics ).
to be fair this is a genre that seems to mainly cater for people that are happy to pay $40 for a print and go nuts if the price goes up to $55 - its probably not an area that is rammed to the rafters with people that would think nothing of dropping, conservatively, $3000 just to get across to see a show.mobius006 wrote:Like the artist? Olly had a huge stack of Skifree prints for sale. I'm guessing iam8bit sold a very small portion of the run in their pre-sale, as Olly had this intended for SDCC (or needed it for SDCC).
Spirited Away and Howls are stunning in person.
Villains look terrific as well.

I get the idea of not dropping 3000 for just one show, but making a whole trip out of it be cool. Fitz I'll be in line for sure, I'll do my US duty and pick you up something atleast when the time comes
