My guess is Banksy bought the piece via a proxy so it was his to destroy. Price @ the hammer was the exact same @ his previous auction high and the provenance was direct from the artist, so the coincidence was obvious... and pretty drymounting brilliant

Really looks like it stopped where it did to make a new piece. Maybe a mechanical failure, but it looks intentional. Whatever, I love this, it’s a headline, it’s funny, and it’s worth way more now.
I have a hard time believing some of them didn’t know this would happen. This part especially sounds like a cartoon. After a man dressed in black sporting sunglasses and a hat was seen scuffling with security guards near the entrance to Sotheby’s shortly after the incident, speculation mounted that the elusive artist had himself pressed the button that destroyed the work.

Couple things:
The image in the frame looks to be illuminated or projected.
The point at which the shredding stops compared to what is in the frame seems off. You can still see the top of the girls head in the frame whereas the shredder stops right below her neck. idk, looks weird.
Homeboy is still using a landline.
Like it either way you shred it.
Poster Mountain can fix that.

I think this is awesome, but I'm confused. I know things go for more at official auction houses, but isn't a signed Girl with Balloon around a $100k piece? What made this go for $1.4M?

Just brilliant. I know it sounds trite but I’m happy to be the same age as Banks and to be able to see these stunts play out. The Disney prisoner, $60 originals on the street, this, just everything. Art historians will talk about this fudge for generations to come and we have a front row seat. Or at least nosebleeds. drymounting awesome.
