Shag (Josh Agle) Thread of Swingin' High-Class Consumerism
Seriously, I want to know. There’s never any discussion of his art around here, no one anticipates releases, nothing. Is there a reason for this? Is his work not relevant anymore? I’ve been into Josh's work for 7-8 years, long before I knew anything about art prints (even though I don’t own any of his work — too expensive). So what’s the deal?

Not enough people here can afford it, so they don't talk about it. Too many don't care about the art unless they can own a copy.

I like his style a lot. I don't own anything by him right now, but I can see myself going after some things in the future.
I don't know enough about the work other than to say that I like it.

I like a lot of his stuff. I don't own anything because the stuff that I'd want is way out of my price range, but I really do appreciate his work.

Well, that's just it. Either you dig that crazy vibe, or you don't. Even though I'm sure the 60s weren't really like that for most people, it makes me long for that swingin' rat pack, 3 martini lunch era.Mention wrote:I appreciate Shag's work, but none of it ever screams at me. Kind of has that intro to "I dream of Jeannie" feel.

That's exactly right. If an artist is selling prints for more than a few hundred dollars here, and/or didn't come from a gig poster or street art background, they are not respected. Most of the new art buyers still have swollen nuts and are going for the big potential to flip for profit if they need to.mistersmith wrote:Not enough people here can afford it, so they don't talk about it. But, with that said, Shag is also a bit too "low-brow" (if anyone still uses that term) for the contemporary market. Seems like the artists who shifted into "pop-surrealism" 4-5 years ago have remained popular... Artists like Ron English, Becca, Camille Rose Garcia, etc... Whereas Ausgang, Coop, Pizz, and others have languished in the popular market recently. Robert Williams can do no wrong and will always be at the top of the "alternative" art pyramid.
I for one, am a huge Shag fan, have been buying his prints up until about 3 years ago when I started to get priced out of the market and my tastes shifted. His retro flavor isn't really my taste anymore, but I look back on his work with fondness and admiration as a part of my collection.

Are you saying I am a new art buyer with swollen nuts, or that I buy for the big potential to flip?
