I don't know much about shopify, but is it really that hard to set things up correctly? I am pretty sure I would get it right from the first time, more likely than not anyway.

To answer this...
No. It literally asks how many of a product you want in inventory. It even gives you the option to set a publish date and time.

For how many drops they do, for an edition of 400, they should drop 300-350, wait for the sell out drop another 25, then sell out and 25. it would take seconds and prevent a over sell out... not that difficult.

Also Shopify has back end apps that you can add to your site to prevent stuff like this.

More than likely they had the option to " Allow customers to purchase this product when it's out of stock selected.
