I totally agree with you on this subject Brian.

...have you asked Dan about it directly? He was probably commissioned for the book cover , no? The answer could be as simple as that it is a rights issue - he might not be allowed to reprint the image...

Just a guess.
i did ask him a while ago as well. He told me the same thing he told barrettrhoades..."no plans of an art print yet... but maybe sometime in the future". Which leads me to believe he did retain the rights to make an art print of it. We know it's popular. It was voted top 3 book covers of 2009 on amazon.com. I honestly don't see why Dan would redo Don before possibly making this a print. I guarantee it would have had an equal amount of sales and would have satisfied a lot of Dan's fan base. He could have even tossed in a fade in the background so it could be more Don like.
But I guess it's all a moot point now. Dan decided to satisfy the majority of his fan base and hopefully tackle on the job of hand pulling 300 new Don's in the hope of showing off his improved craftsmanship. I respect whatever decision he makes. I'm happy to finally be a part of his print club.

Well hell, now that we are all fine with reprints...
Mr. Stout - please reprint The Thing, Blade Runner, Lost and Basterds.
Mr. Horkey, I'd like a Nesting.
Mr. Sperry, Dylan and Small Change please.
And for you, Mr. Doyle, White Dragon will do.
Or all of you can just adopt the policy of Unlimited Editions for all of your pieces.

No one will care.

(This DSO #2 isn't a huge deal to me personally and Dan can do whatever he wants, but guaranteed every single one of you has at least one piece in your collection where if it was reprinted you would be pissed*, end of story.)
*Edit: pissed might be too strong of a word - upset at the very least.

Not that too far off from each other in my opinion.

Near perfect blend on old print.

Maybe part of the reason for the 2nd edition was that Dan wasn't satisfied with the consistency of the blends on Don. I know the only Don I've seen that's in a league with Barrett's is on sleightofhands wall.

Speaking as someone who doesn't have the original, I suppose that even though I'm happy to be getting this, I would have been just as happy with a newly designed DSO2 follow up--which also would presumably enhance the original rather than replace it.

Dan stepped outside, and was promptly attacked by wolves.

McCarthy never seemed like an artist who gave 2 shits about aftermarket prices. It seems the only reason his print runs aren't 1000+ is because he hasn't figured out a way to clone himself yet. Kinda surprised reprints didn't come sooner.

Kinda wish Dan had issued a DSO 2 in the manner of the IFGTBL series, versus a remake of the original DSO image. Just to see how he would tweak it.

I bought into the 10/11 club for the monthly prints that have not been created yet, and I can't wait to see what happens this year...

2nd editions are a slap in the face to your fans (livelihood). Give it another 5 years and expect 2nd editions of all his popular prints.

different scenario. the gallery that ran "black osprey" did a shitty print job and aaron halted production at 15 examples. the print was never created to aaron's satisfaction and he had a falling out with the gallery.
