KAWS
This write up on Artsy is helpful if anyone's interested in an intro to KAWS. While I generally don't connect with most of his art, reading this helped me gain an appreciation for him as an artist that I didn't quite have before.

his Together Again figure has always stood out to me..

His super hero black and whites are what first attracted me, mainly xmen. They look great. Then he was involved in some Prometheus controversy where Mondo canceled the sale of his print. Since then he has been a polarizing figure. Its unfortunate but there was never a clear cut answer. More leaning to Marko got the shaft.
I think it was pretty clear cut.

I had always wondered what the controversy was in regards to MM, but never looked until I saw this thread.

It certainly looks like he swiped the main figure pose for his Prometheus poster from a Tim Bradstreet comic cover, but the images are otherwise so different that it doesn't make sense to me why this was ever an issue.

Maybe not artists I just don't get and more like art that I just don't get the appeal: Grandma Moses, Clementine Hunter and the like. Some of it is like a 5th grade art project.

Exactly, the final image is significantly different from the original. Not sure why this would be a big deal when other artists do the same thing with screencaps from the movie/show that the poster is for with nary a quibble.

For instance, Gabz Iron Man poster includes a huge head shot of Jeff Bridges's character that might as well be a tracing of the same image from the movie.

I don't understand why that is fair game while what Manev did is not.

I don't particularly care for his purely pop culture paintings, but agree with the article's take on his abstract works. I find the large ones to be rather captivating.

I don't even find the "abstract" stuff appealing...the majority has the X and eyeball somewhere in it...or it's on a cutout of some pop culture character or dolphin. I do think he is talented from the colors he uses, but that's the nicest thing I can say about his work.

You really do appreciate it more in person. For instance, my friend owns a set of Snoopy prints and they just pop off the wall. Really nice to look at whenever I went there.
