I saw the Beastie Boys in 1995.
One musician… definitely solid on the bass.
He only played it for half the show which consisted of people yelling into microphones over prerecorded stuff. I enjoyed the bass stuff… way better than I can play. But cmon, listening to Brass Monkey…you gotta figure some people are going to find it the most annoying sound in the world.

If brass monkey is your idea of the Beastie boys I don't know what to tell you. Paul's boutique is a masterpiece but their style was really defined with check your head. (Cue American psycho rant about Phil Collins)
Was 95 when they toured with the roots?
Id argue Ill Communication is their “masterpiece”. Really shows off their diversity of influences, as well as talent as musicians and MCs.

Definitely a line in the sand at check your head, and yeah I agree with you, ill communication really fleshed it out. It's easy not to like their first album, it's fairly abrasive but obviously holds a firm place in pop culture history.

Although Check Yer Heed was a mindblower for genX when it came out. First time I heard it was from a kid on my hall who ran into the room basically screaming about it after one listen. They definitely tightened things up from there with Ill Comms, which is truly killer. Not much since has moved the needle for me though. SAD!
Great run from PB to IC is what I’m getting at here
