First, I did search for an Alex Grey discussion thread and couldn't find one. If that was my mistake, feel free to delete this and point me towards a better place to post.

Shakedowngallery.com is selling a signed/numbered blotter print of Alex's "Shpongle" image today at noon eastern. I know that Shakedown sold the Sperry Beatles blotters, and I know they were authorized since Chuck talked about them on social media.

I just searched EB for Alex Grey blotters and saw that there was a bootleg one. Then, I checked Alex's social media and saw no mention of today's drop.

They are supposedly signed by him, but I see that the "bootleg" one here on EB says it's signed too. (not sure how a bootleg run gets signed, unless of course the sig is forged).

Any input? I tried to contact Alex directly through Facebook but it doesn't look like he has a contact option.

Thanks!

Hi. I am the owner / operator of Shakedown Gallery. These prints are 100% authorized.

Prints will be signed by Alex the weekend of the Emerald Cup in Santa Rosa, CA and shipped early the following week. I am saying December 13th will be the ship date.

We'll also be releasing two unsigned "open edition" prints at the Emerald Cup -- Alex Grey's Cannabacchus design and a new design by Allyson Grey.

Thank you!

Now that the edition is signed and ready to ship, here's a pic of an actual signed, numbered print:

What bootleg blotter are you referring to? Most of the ones listed on EB are legit.

A couple are from the old Tripatourium(sp?) website. Those have a signed and unsigned edition.

That new one looks very nice and vibrant, Shadygrove! Thanks for the photos.

That one. Unless the "bootleg" notation is incorrect. It does seem strange that a bootleg edition would be signed.

Alex Grey never released a blotter of that image. Someone probably found one on ebay and added it to the listings just so people are aware there are bootlegs on the market.

If you search ebay there are quite a few bootleg Alex Grey blotters or that use his images. Most get pulled when people report them. There are companies out there that just rip off artists and use their images for blotter art because it looks psychedelic.

Do a blotter art search on ebay and you will see lots of other artists imagery turned into blotter art from the Simpsons to Stanley Mouse (most GD stuff unofficial) to MC Escher.

Most tend to be unofficial releases.

I think there is a blotter art thread on here somewhere.

There have been quite a few bootlegs of Alex's work. In 2013 we did an official release of the St Albert design to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of Albert Hofmann's famous Bicycle Day:

That edition sold out, but spirit willing, maybe we will be able to do a variation on the theme for the 75th Anniversary in 2018.

:P

Thanks for the feedback on the new edition mattlew69!
