What tips / guidelines are out there to facilitate a safe trade amongst unknown parties? Should there be any collateral in place until art is delivered?

Step one: Don't trade with someone who has two posts dating back to 2011 unless they send the item first.

could each paypal the value of the poster. and dispute if fudge hits the fan. or just send the posters to me and I'll make sure it works.
pay via paypal, use credit card, file dispute at the 20 day mark if suspicious. don't deal with noobs. don't trade with noobs. request feedback ahead of time. there are lots of good people 'round here.

Search their username and see if there's a Callout thread. For instance, if you're going to trade with Klub, don't.

This is the only safe way -- or use a trusted intermediary who waits until both pieces of the trade has been received, inspects them, and sends them on to their respective destinations.

I have taken this advice before and recommend it. The paypal fees offer peace of mind. Just buy each others prints for the same amount and you are both protected.

Yep. Do that, and refund when everybody's satisfied. Easy peasy.

Paypal is a good idea if you don't want to foot the bill for 2 shipping charges. The only potential issue is that someone can still file a false claim after getting the print.

If it were me and the trade was monetarily large enough or for very rare prints, I would use a trusted 3rd party.
