First of all, welcome to the forums! Hope you have a good time.
I've had some good luck using Instagram, following my favorite artists, and just browsing common interests. It's lead to discovering some art and artists that I've never seen before. I think it's helped broaden my horizons or at least given me a greater appreciation for street art.
There's some good advice in here already about collecting and EB board mentality. My two cents would be to try to be polite and respectful.
Depending on what your disposable income is and how much you like owning prints, it'd be wise to invest in a flat file sooner or later to store prints. I'd also put aside some money for framing expenses. Custom frames and museum glass (if desired) are expensive.

Tim Doyle and his "scene" hate this place. Or so I have heard.
Lies are a funny thing. They slip through your fingertips because they never happened to you. Time wounds all the heals as we fade out of view
There's a ton of artists that no longer are active members of the board because of the snooty level of entitlement preached by a good number of posters on the board. I'm impressed Mitchell is actually still posting after the beating he took from his Hitler Super.
But that's not what this thread is about.

My advice is to learn how to enjoy images without needing to own them. In the initial enthusiasm of this hobby, it doesn't take long to find you've purchased more prints than you'll ever actually hang on your wall. Every year there will be a few prints that you would absolutely love to own and frame; and then there'll be lots and lots of other prints that you think are pretty cool and might be nice to have, just in case. Make a Pinterest page or a folder of jpegs for those prints; then when something truly special comes along, you'll be in a better position to try for it.
I've also found around here that there's a lot of hype around every major gallery show or drop, which can make me feel like I must try for it if at all possible, because surely this is the biggest thing of the year. But then right after the date passes, that board goes completely silent and everyone moves on to next week's show. I also find that in the lead-up to a drop I can gaze at a preview pic over and over and convince myself that I really need that print. I miss out on the drop (almost always), and by a day or two later I'm wondering why it was ever such a big deal.
That doesn't answer your question about which artists to follow, but it's some observations from lurking here for a couple of years.

Buy everything you can. When the reality of the cash flowing out finally sinks in... you will know what art you like and what you don't. Or you could just turn to flipping.
But welcome. Check out LandLand, Zach Landrum, Brandon Holt, some different styles but great artists.

Haha thanks for the awesome advice guys, totally digging all the psychedelic stuff-- brings me back to right around 3rd grade, those would make great folders
Yeah, I'm totally down to post some pics of the room-- let me know if it gives you guys any ideas.
As you can see, I got an awesome pasteur print up. Probably "worth" less than the frame, but I love the image more than my Peace and Freedom Dove and War is Over, so it's up.
Also, I enjoy sleeping under a snarling direwolf.
