I'm helping put together a list for a friend and wanted some second opinions.

Who do you think are the 15 most important (living) contemporary artists? "Important" being defined as both most the well known by the general public and widely received.

it would have been a lot easier for me to cut and paste something I googled and so look cultured and smart if you had asked for a top 10 instead.

Nobody that any of us collect I am sure.

But I feel like you have to throw out Banksy's name in the contemporary art field just solely based on the media attention. I don't know if he is "important" enough though. I also don't know if this is referencing any specific genre of art (i.e. excludes street/urban art).

Some people here buy Richters.
And he'll probably make it to the top 15.

That Tauba bird is kind of a big deal now.

Andreas Gursky, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami, Yue Minjun and Damien Hirst were a few that immediately came to mind for me. As far as street artists go I can't think of too many people outside of the EB/Banksy Forum world.

I would put Chuck Close, Ed Ruscha, and Jasper Johns on my list.

It really depends on what style and medium you are talking about though.

This is like asking a bunch of bums drinking jug wine what the top 15 producers in the world are.
