How does a private commision happen? I've seen quite a few postings about a private commision and was curious how it worked. Do you just contact an artist, tell what you want and how many?

Understand your market, understand your demographic, understand your artist. Do not insult either of the three and you will be successful.

Best solution is to just email the artist. Know what size you are looking for and ask them for a price. Some times it can be quick and other times take awhile.

So I assume I opened a can of worms with this question, I was just curious about the process, not really planning on trying to get something done.
Email an inquiry to an artist and take it from there, basically. Between licensed or unlicensed work, price, etc., varies from artist to artist. Just be respectful 'bove all else.
