Most often, I don't want a set and this seems to be the way Scott has been selling them recently. I adore his style. I'm just one of the casualties in this hobby - getting priced out (too expensive.)

Its more the price of Scott C Showdown art then the cost of giclee.
He sells hundreds of 3.5"x3.5" watercolors for $375-$425 during his shows.

James Jean isn't selling his giclee timed editions for $200 each because giclee costs $180 each to make and he needs some profit... He's James Jean.
Scott can command the higher prices as well on his extremely well established series.

But yes, I usually split these up. I got the Harold and Maude from someone :notworthy:

Indeed. Great for the artists to make decent money. I'm sure for every collector that drops-out, (poors), new collectors come-in to take their place. It's still fun to see the new art that gets released from all artists whether giclee or screen print even if I don't purchase.

$15/Showdown is pretty decent. These sets were $65 during the 2012 holiday sale so it's not like they've raised the prices on these things by an insane amount.

I passed on set but only because the movie choices didn't thrill me as a whole and I didn't feel like going through the trouble of finding people to split with like I have in years past.

StaticMedium wrote:High end digital printing, or giclée* printing is considerably more expensive than screen printing. Unless you're getting into some super niche screen printing, that's a simple fact.

The ink used by most commercial inkjet printers is one of the most expensive liquids on the planet. Liquids that beat it out are fairly exotic; horseshoe crab blood, LSD, king cobra venom, etc. In comparison, the ink used in screen printing, whether it's the water soluble or oil variety, is much cheaper.

The paper that Mike's, and 95% of our orders, are on is Moab Entrada 290gsm Cotton Rag. It's a museum grade fully archival paper and is much more expensive than the stocks used by most for screen printing.

There's more to it than just "command + P" in a good digital print shop. Every print in ours is flattened by hand and cut by hand before the quality control process can begin. Screen prints are on pre cut, pre flattened sheets. So the labor cost for screen printing and digital printing is high either way.

We offer both screen printing and digital printing, and our screen printer gives this post his stamp of approval. So, you know, we're not THAT bias.

* "Giclée", by the way, is just a made up French word that was created by some guy named Jack Duganne in 1991. He wanted a fancy, expensive sounding word so that he could charge outrageous prices for the service. There's no standardization for what makes a fine art giclée any different from something printed on a home inkjet printer, so the word doesn't really mean much. Well, it is modern French slang for "splooge", so there's that.

Think I'm gonna just keep reposting it till you guys stop having an irrational hatred of giclees.

*shrug* Giclee just became too all-encompassing of a term and it's devalued the work that a place like Static Medium does to ensure clear and accurate print reproductions of paintings. But I also think $15 per limited edition showdown is pretty reasonable. Not like it would cover the cost of my diamond-encrusted gold monocles or anything.

I don't hate giclees. Actually, I'm weirdly obsessed with digital printing...love printing stuff. I'd rather stick to screen prints...just a personal preference.

I agree that $15 per print isn't much. It is the switch to selling "sets" which drives the price up to $75- add shipping and that blows the hell outta' a hundred dollar bill. I know a lot of people sell what they don't want - I'm just not inclined to go that route.

No worries. More so the comment I quoted not yourself.

Most screen prints are done by machine printers, not by hand.

And the positive image to make those screens are usually printed with digital printers if i'm not mistaken.

I'm just always curious with people fetichism of screen prints with inks laying on top of other inks.

They have pretty much always done sets. Very few have been available as singles.

Think the 5-print set may also come up as more of a G1988 thing - Scott's sold single ones on his site before (like his Cap: Civil War showdown).
