a trimmed print is worth SO much less than a torn one!
how would people know it was trimmed?
any serious collector would check the measurements. this game has been goin' on a long time for 60's stuff whereby sellers try to trim off the damage & sell it as if its in better shape than it really is.

But in this case, it's an artist's proof.. (i.e. nothing to compare it to). Plus, if the left border was trimmed like the right one, you'd not only get a cleaner looking print, but it would be centered.

i hear ya but it's just not an accepted practice to trim prints. restoration is still preferable.

All of Mark's regular proofs are the same size, 23 x 35. A collector that would buy this would most cretainly know that. I say screw the repair, and chop it up. Those variants are HARD to find. You could probably get more for the 2 posters and 5 handbills than for the proof. Plus, you know I'll sell you mine :D

and there is now this documentation and picture of the original size.....

just frame it and it will hold down the rip and you will barely see it.

I imagine Jojo has dealt with this awhile ago, but it's an interesting discussion.
As a collector of vintage prints, with such a special piece, I would linen back it. The process of attaching it to the linen would make the rip almost invisible, and this is archivally reversible. I'm guessing it would cost about $60 to linen-back a print of this size. I use M+W in Manhattan. Extremely professional-quality work, though not cheap.

I'm not sure about trimming the edge. For most posters it's the "kiss of death" for value, but with some modern works that are printed with wide margins, I know that it has sometimes been done, as long as the image is unaffected.

I sold this a long time ago......torn.

If I still had it; I would probably contact mark to see if he would cut it up into two posters and a handbill strip. Pay him to sign them all and move on.

i would have it linen backed. i think that always looks the best for tear repairs.

if it were a poster and not a proof, I probably would have repaired as well.

Whatever happened with this?
I happen to be the current owner. I haven't done anything with it to this point. I think Chris at Chameleon could fix it up without much bother, and I doubt it would require any supportive backing.
