A D.I.Y. frame Project for my Converge/Horkey
OK No work yesterday as I had other commitments but overnight....
I had a few layers of Poly on already. That had to be sanded pretty hard to get all the dog hair, dust, & air bubbles out of the poly.
This looks alot harsher than it was(That's just the Night lighting on black that makes it look as though I took off all the paint down to primer)
Then one more exact coat of poly with the brush
After that coat dried I layed on two very generous coats with a foam brush.
Really the only way to get a smooth coat with out spraying it down.
I slapped on an extra third coat at the Name plates now they are dry it feels like carved acrylic.
Well today I have to go finish a Deck off so I can get my tools back to finish the Frame. But last night was real good in terms of getting close to Finished.

when a frame costs more than the print......I'd say that's a little overkill. But, when you do it yourself.......wow, that's pretty serious.
Nice frame by the way........that kind of puts framefetish to shame.

Alrighty I have my tools back(Had 'em yesterday but couldn't work on the frame) and I'm ready to roll...
A Nice 4/4 chunk 'o Mahogany
I only need 49" inch pieces(Rough to start), all That Fuzz on the side has got to go. So cut it to rough..
Then a few passes thru the Joiner to straighten the edge.
The another rough cut(To width)
Rough cut mohog
Another trip through the Joiner to get every thing even and square
OK so now I have to figure how much of the inner frame I want exposed
OK for my first pass I cut the stock at 15 degrees partially through the top of the stock.
Well it's not very apparent that the 15 degree cut is there....But trust me it is. The second cut was an Eye up angle...I can't tell ya what it was, or how much I exactly cut off...I just did what looks good to me.
This pic is setting that angle
The rough frame shape is apparent...
Someone mentioned earlier about "routing the rabbit in." Well that's a GREAT way to do it for most frames but when the thing is carved like this it's better to have cut the frame rabbit with the table saw. It's much more gentle.
The first pass
Setting the depth by eye, I like a little over cut on the second pass.
After sanding down the frame sections, getting rid of all the wild curly fibers that you get from Mohog...Every edge & corner is fouled with it sanding is the only way to really deal with that.
When cutting the end of a piece of material, make sure to have a backer.
For Two reasons, A.) So the wood doesn't bend and the angle is bad & B.) To Minimize tear out & fraying of your material.
Nice clean corners, one side only.
I only cut one side because it's an inside frame, there might be minor variations in the outer frame so I'll put in place and scribe each piece to fit on it's own.
You can see how it's looking here
The first rail is cut and in place
The 100th Pic of the D.I.Y
another rail in....
and so on.
That's it for now, I'll be sanding these parts and then the process of Masking, Gold Leafing, Poly(a bunch), sanding, 1 coat of poly, sanding, connecting the two frames, final touch up, matting & THEN closing the thing up will be coming up.........
(Where's a good smiley for wiping the sweat from yer brow when ya need one.. )
Oh and I have to Thank Mr.Horkey for taking care of me in such a kind fashion, a nice pristine A/P will be sliding into this Beast!!!
Just too Kind, I'd have been MORE than happy if he'd have just signed my S&D
He addressed the tube back so nice I don't wanna get rid of it
& A Little extra Booty
I can't tell ya how drymountin' PSYCHED I am!!!!
