keep an eye on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and Nextdoor. Flat files are crazy expensive new. Finding the right used flatfile locally might take some patience but it makes storing/collecting soo much easier

Definitely gonna get a better price buying used. You can find ones across the whole range of conditions and prices if you keep an eye on those market places perfect mentioned.
Can't say enough good things about flat files. Some people on this board have done some cool things with them to make them work in smaller spaces.

Flat files are the way to go. Your best bet is to find something used through Facebook marketplace or craigslist. I found a 12 drawer wood flat file for $400, but I have seen them go for as low as $50.

We just picked up a bunch of vintage architectural flat file cabinets from an engineering firm that was closing shop. 47”wide x 37” deep x 17.5” high per each 5 drawer section. $250 for 5 drawer. $200 for every additional section. $800 for a 4 section stack. We have more sections that aren’t in the photo. These are heavy steel. Some wear, but completely functional. Cash and carry. Garage pick up in Easton, PA.

also, add "map cabinet" to your searches. you can also call engineers, architects, big construction companies to check. that's how I came across a few locally. cold call and explain you are looking for one, might get lucky.
