2020 Rotten Oscars

I'm pretty sour on the idea of 1917 running away with a bunch of awards as well. I know I'm in the minority, but I won't be shy; that film doesn't work for me. I'm a huge Roger Deakins fan and I think he did a tremendous job. I just don't think it was the right job for this movie. The "one take" approach is an unnecessary gimmick and it takes away from the movie. There's not much plot and the film ends up feeling like WAR MOVIE: THE RIDE. I don't understand the reasoning behind making it appear to be one take. No shot is longer than 8 minutes.

Don't get me wrong, it's beautifully shot with camerawork heavily inspired by Paths of Glory and Full Metal Jacket, but I'm not enamored with the movie in any way.

Also, don't get me started on Joker. Utterly mediocre, half-baked Scorsese with an obvious performance by Phoenix. Not a fan...

I'd be thrilled to see The Irishman run away with tons of awards, but I'm not sure it's going to win anything. That and Parasite are my favorites out of the nominated films. I'm actually not the biggest fan of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I don't dislike it, it's an enjoyable flick, but it barely made my Top 25 and I don't think it warrants all the noms. Brad Pitt is fun, but I preferred his work in Ad Astra and would rather see Pesci honored for his subtle yet incredible performance. I think there are several actors more worthy than DiCaprio.

Speaking of Ad Astra, I'm a big fan, more so than most. It's one I keep going back to. There's a solid audio commentary on the blu-ray. It should've at least got a visual effects nom. (I'll save my Lion King rant for another day.)

Just got my picks in. Hoping I'm wrong on a lot of them and we're thrown some surprises tonight!

Agree with your thoughts in 1917. I didn't get the hype. I thought it was fine, but nowhere near what others say. I lost track of the cuts at 20 and that was before they jumped a few hours. it annoys me more than usual because there are so many great movies this year, and I feel like this is the one that will take away some trophies from more deserving people. Also, Germans should be better shots from 10 feet away.

Very much disagree with your opinion of OUATIH, it was personally my favorite movie of the year. I know Pitt will win but I'd be so delighted to see Pesci take it.

I loved The Irishman, probably #2 of the year and I'm so glad I saw it in a theater. I do not think it'll win anything though. Between the sour taste some in the Academy have over Netflix, and such a strong field this year, I think it'll get shut out.

Looking forward to tonight. This thread always makes it more fun.

Since we're on 1917: it felt shallow and unsubstantial, to me. And seemed obviously created from a list of awards-baiting check boxes. It looked beautiful but the 'single shot' gimmick is a technical exercise that was more distracting than immersive: much of the time the film felt like I was watching someone playing a first-person shooter. The cameos were gratuitous and also distracting. In the end, we learned nothing, really, about the character(s) in it? Using WW1 as a setting was pointless. The film had nothing to say about war, let alone anything to say about that specific war. I didn't hate it, I just sound that way when I think about it compared to the other BP nominees that I thought were more much more affecting and passionate.

I definitely had a different experience with OUATIH than you, especially with Pitt and Leo's performances. I really did love it. I'll be happy to see it take almost any award it does, though I'd say that about Parasite , too. The Irishman, I also loved, definitely.

Agreed, I liked Ad Astra very much. I'm seeing a bunch of films on people's lists in the thread here that are deserving of all the praise they get.

It is my humble opinion that Cloud Atlas was snubbed for the following:

Best Score
Best Editing
Best Supporting Actress: Doona Bae
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Makeup & Hairstyling
Best Production Design
Possibly Best Supporting actor for Ben Winshaw

And though its not a snub, I may even like Tom Hanks, in his multiple roles, better then Grandpa Lincoln wrapped in a blanket. (no offense to the incredible Mr. Day-Lewis)

Midday, I totally agree about 1917. I'd like to see OUATIH again. I saw it in the theater and enjoyed it and I've seen it once since, but it was on the dingiest-looking low-quality screener.
