Death Metal... all metal really...

Since the Meshuggah thread had a few pages, maybe there are enough members of this forum to warrant a metal thread.

To start, here were my favourites from last year:

#1 - Beyond Creation - The Aura
I doubt anyone here heard this indie Canadian release but I guarantee if you like DM with memorable songs and delicious fretless bass, you will fudge bricks when you hear this. This will be a record I will appreciate for a very, very long time.

#2 - Gorod - Transcendence EP
It's about a 35m EP with a Flamenco style cover of one of their old songs, a perfect cover of a Cynic song and a 15 minute epic Prog/Death/Thrash that is so full of twists and turns, it's almost exhausting to listen to. These guys are on another level. They can be so brutal but the melodic thrash parts are so hook laden you hum them to yourself after one listen.

#3 - Benighted - Asylum Cave
How much is enough Pig Squeal? If it was possible to say that there's a tasteful way to utilize Pigsqueal vocals, this would be it. Pretty brutal Death Metal with a couple short melodic parts. Again, it's about memorable songs, lots of bands can keep up with Benighted but it's hard to make memorable Death Metal songs.

I really liked The Black Dahlia Murder's new album Ritual. They're definitely one of my favorite bands, although I do lean more toward deathcore than straight death metal

Been a fan their entire career. Look for the cover of "Paint it Black" from 1 of the first 2 EP's they put out. 2nd best only to the Stones themselves. I would just call them a straight up Thrash band. I can't think of anyone in the US that emulates Sweeden as well as these guys. The early work had some Death Metal elements but they've streamlined and found a formula that works for them. They aren't doing anything new but as I always say, good thrash never goes out of style.

I really havent listened a lot to the Black Dahlia Murder's last few albums but Miasma gets played reguraly. I thought their dvd Majesty was great, the energy of their live performance was captured very good. The booze and weed induced fun, backstage and on the tourbus had me laughing out loud a few times.
Any one got a recommendation for good metal concert/documentary Dvd's?

Miasma is the tits. Definitely my favorite of all their albums. I've had Ritual but for some reason I just haven't given it a good listen yet. Ever since their original lead guitarist left their solos haven't been the same! Don't get me wrong.. I still get boners so hard I start to bleed out of my eurethra but Miasma is just hard to beat. Not many screenprints for Blach Dahlia, but thank god I own the best one



I've recently been listening to the new Veil of Maya album Eclipse. They have some the most ridiculous timings and breakdowns. Lol, I felt like such a high school kid saying 'breakdowns'. I think I've reverted to saying 'this part' when listening to it. I feel dirty saying that other word.

I've always wanted a gigposter for them but like you said there aren't very many, I think I like DWITTs the best though.

Veil of Maya is the fudge - everything they've put out is just bliss to the ears. Very technical and can't complain about their awesome breakdowns, they would be super fun live!

Really liked Atma. One of my favorits from last year. Crowbar's Sever the wicked hand is another one. Couldn't go to their concert last year somehow this happens every time they tour these parts so I have never seen them live.
Best concert i went to last year is Nile. Super small venue with great sound and some of the best musicians in metal.
