Beer - trading & discussion
Lots of IPA talks going on recently... In terms of "popular" pale ales (correction), I can provide my input. I actually did a side-by-side on Friday:
Heady > Unsessionable > Elder > Enjoy By > Zombie Dust
If my memory serves me correct, I would add a few into the mix:
Heady > Todd > Unsessionable > Dreadnaught > Elder > Enjoy By > Yellow Rose > Two Hearted > Hopslam > Sculpin > Pseudo Sue > Zombie Dust
Yes, I am on the Heady "bandwagon". It is an extremely good beer if it is fresh, but it falls VERY quickly with more than one (1) month of age. Since many of these are seasonable, you would never be able to have an accurate side-by-side of all the beers listed above. I've had hundreds, if not thousands, of other IPAs, but I think these are the names I see the most around here.
The IPA that I want to try the most is Younger.

does heady fall off that quickly? i know pliny does. john kimmich is even quoted to say 3-6 months on heady is optimal
Yeah, heady def falls off. I'd say drink within 3 months, but freshest is bestest.
That todd is fantastic. Had my last can the other night and I feel like that fell off as well.

I have one can that I've already sat on for about 6 weeks. A buddy has been camping upstate and makes the run into VT, but that's done with now.
I'd like to round up 3 buddies and make a day trip, we'll see. It's 7 hours each way, oy.
And I'll be honest, Other Half out here has made my desire for heady subside. Guys are killing it.

Anything that is heavily dry hopped, aka everything on the left side of my list, will fall off very quickly. When I brew IPAs, I usually make 5 gal batches and split that with a friend. That way, I can polish off my case within a month, as a most of the dry hops will have fallen off much quicker than 3 months. ...And at this point in my snobishness, if your IPA is not heavily dry hopped, I don't want it.guryter wrote:Yeah, heady def falls off. Yeah it is. For most of us these distinctions are meaningless, but for the people that take life (and beer!) way too seriously, ZD is totally an IPA. The label might not use the word "India" but everything about the beer screams it...this is a cool read:Kdh12 wrote:Zombie isn't an IPA
