I always thought it was due to pet hair having oils in it, coupled with the fact it gets drymounting everywhere. I seem to be able to find my dog's hair even unwrapped/sealed food bought outside the home.

Eh I guess so - I feel like oils would only matter when handling really expensive/delicate originals.
