Took this last night, not super crazy amazing or anything but the colors in our tree came out great. I wish we'd have taken the damn coaster out from under the flute, and wiped off the fingerprints, but it's not like this is advertising photography or anything. We're gonna use this for our Christmas card, we think. Smallish zoom lens at 49mm, ISO 100, f/10, 30 sec.

Cool. What kind of resolution are you getting from the D50? Did you have enlarge the image much for the giclée?

BTW, cat butt is nothing to laugh at.

i get 300dpi out of the d50 if i crank its resolution settings all the way up. no, i dont shoot in RAW. going as big as i did at 24x36, on paper it would have looked a little fuzzy, but on canvas, 300 dpi is about the minimum for that size since when you print on canvas, you get a very different look than on paper. canvas is more 'forgiving' when it comes to resolution, which is why my giclee's are PERFECT. that, and luther @ axelle is truly a master printer.

Chances are the guy got it the same way I get all my miraculous shots: holding the shutter down and taking a few dozen, few hundred, few thousand shots. I love digital photography, not only is it dirt cheap but you can take endless pictures and discard any and all screwups instantly, you don't have to pay and wait to develop stuff to see what you got. I'll take hundreds and keep two all day long.

I'm willing to bet that photographer has been trying to get that shot for years. And it's perfect, so, he wins.

you may be correct. personally, i havent adopted that method of digital photography yet. at most ill take 2 or 3 shots of a subject, either bracketing up or down, or adjusting my flash position.

call me old school i guess.

Not me. When things are moving around I'll hold the shutter down forever. 99% are blurry, eyes are closed, framing is shitty, but that one-in-a-million is pretty amazing. Some of my favorite pics ever are like that.

i guess its just ingrained in me. i learned how to shoot on medium format mamiyas shooting weddings, portraits, and schools with my parents. that film aint cheap, and they taught me to take my time when setting up a shot. and thats not a diss or anything on you, dont take it that way. ill admit it, i tried it a few times in the city when i first got the DSLR. it was nice to just hold the shutter down and go nuts like on the old motor-driven bodies back in the day. its just not my style.
