And the thing is, she doesn't argue about it and has admitted that it's like a weight off her mind every night. She has 2-3 hours to finish homework, create, read, go to sleep early, whatever.

So yeah, those lame parents who just give their kid the pad for hours on end really suck. But there have always been and will always be shitty parents out there. Nothing new.

Bravo. That is refreshing to read. I visited my sister and my 12 year old niece over the weekend. She got an iPhone for Christmas and she spent 3/4 of the time I was there in her room texting. Every time we turned around she had wandered off to her room.

Went to a kids birthday party where all kids were all strategically placed around the power outlets in clusters on tablets. No one playing interactively.

Avoided tablet here until Christmas but he still is happier to play, only uses it for 15 mins allocated to PBS kids.

It's a tool like any other, learning to respect it and use in moderation is key. It's not a surrogate friend or babysitter.

It's different for adults though. Whenever I'm in the way, my wife just turns on my playstation and I'm good for hours. I try to get in the way as much as possible

Look at it this way - when our kids grow up and have offspring, their children will want a smartphone surgically implanted at the base of the skull (c'mon dad, all my friends have one!), and our kids will worry when their child starts dating an AI (what will the neighbors say??)

Do i have kids? No. Do i see how it can be helpful? Yes. Do i see how it is also a problem? Most definitely.
