Lots of cross-hobby stuff on this site... why not one more?

I know there are a various collectors in this market:
-Bullion collectors
-90% junk silver collectors
-Foreign coin collectors
-US coin collectors
-999 pure coin collectors
-etc.

There are a lot of things these folks have in common... reasons for collecting, storage options, grading services, buy/sell/trade, spot discussions, etc.

...Anyone else in this hobby?

I collect coins, mostly US 20th century. Down to just needing the 1922 plain for the Lincoln cents. I'm done with the Franklin Halfs, Washington Quarters, Jefferson Nickels, Roosevelt Dimes. I've moved on to Buffalo Nickels and Mercury Dimes. I've got a few hundred Morgan and Peace Dollars and a few gold pieces.

I started filling out key dates recently on some of the sets and was surprised that there are a crap ton of fakes out there. Evidently many come from China. They literally add mint marks and change a year. Have a 1909 VDB? They add the S. Boom $600. I bought a nearly complete Lincoln set and sold off some dupes and eBay cancelled the 1909 S VDB as not genuine. The guy I bought it from took it back so all was good. There are a couple good coin forums with people who really know their fudge. I posted pics and they said...there are 4 positions for the S and that is not one of them.

I was at a burger joint a couple weeks ago and got 2 silver quarters in change. The lady told me she had a whole roll of them. $20 later I had the whole roll. Its like someone giving me a couple hundred buck.

Yeah, or someone died and the person who cleaned out their house just figured it was just rolls of quarters. Either way it was a bank error in my favor.

The funny thing is that silver coins sound different so I knew the initial 2 were silver when they hit my hand. I then asked her what else she had. She had an unopened roll and one that she just opened when I paid.

Today's melt value is $4.83 per quarter. So 80 x 4.83 = $386.40. Less $20 leaves $366 in value. Easier than flipping a print.

^ haha, but could be very true!!

I collect mostly “junk” 90% US coins... but also purchased a few pre-33 US gold coins this last week.

I’m always looking for more 1964, and prior, US silver though.

As for fakes... since I don’t chase rare dates or mint marks, I’ve been fortunate up until this point. I have a sigma in route, just in case, as I start to purchase some $2.5+ coins.

If you’re interested in selling off duplicates, I’m your guy!

Good luck there.

I don’t remember the last time I paid with cash.

I try to use cash anywhere I can. Big brother has less insight into things that way. My first job out of college was working as a consultant for insurance companies calculating insured financial losses for businesses. It afforded by a great education into the use on cash in relation to taxes. The best line was from a Dry Cleaner owner. I showed him the calculations for what he lost and his response was, "I lost twice that. For every 2 dollars that come in one leaves in my pocket." I replied, "if you would like to refile your state sales tax returns and federal returns I'd be happy to adjust the numbers." Needless to say the conversation ended there.

My uncle was a big wig accountant for Coke.
He gave me this when I was a little kid.
Not the type of coins, y’all are after, but I think it’s killer.

It has pre-sets for certain coins, metals, and purity, so you toggle through to the correct one and check to see if the coin/bar is within the appropriate range. Once I started purchasing some highly counterfeited coins, such as $2.5 Indians, I thought it was worth the investment.

You ever tell a joke, and hold it up to yourself and say, "yep, that's gold"

I have a $2.5 Indian. I'm assuming the fakes aren't real gold, right?
