My local framer retired at the beginning of the pandemic. I've always wanted to learn the process and now feels like a pretty great time to do just that.

Do you guys have any advice on recommended gear? instructional vids/tutorials? Basically any tips/info would be greatly appreciated.

i recommend browsing through this sub forum, there are some really good framers that frequent the site, and lots of people who do exceptional self framing jobs. viewforum.php?f=31

The "Floating a Print" thread is a good one in the forum link above.

I frame a lot of the stuff I hang. Things that I've found helpful:

- Point Driver (not sure how people frame without one)
- Museum Mounting Kit (rice paper, wheat paste etc)
- Spacers for the glass for pieces without mats
- Glass cutter if you plan on cutting your own glass
- 48" straight edge or the like to act as a guide for glass / foam core cutting
- Plastic coated picture hanging wire
- Frame hardware
- Felt or plastic bumpers for the back, bottom corners of the frame.

I found a place that makes cheap custom frames an hour away where I order my mats and frames. I buy UV anti-glare glass and foam core in bulk.

I googled retail framing supply stores near me and found one. They sold tru-vue by the box....same with foam core. They didn't sell museum glass but I wasn't looking to dig that deep on glass. Odd that they don't mention the brand but it says tru vue premium and conservation glass on the side of the box.

The place is an hour past the middle of nowhere...maybe places that far out have to be more creative in how they sell to stay in business.
