There is Nothing More Depressing to Me then a Waffle for Art

Originally when I started collecting screenprints, they were cheap and only weirdo's wanted them so they really weren't worth a lot of money. The thing I loved about screenprints was it was a way to have some cool art that basically anyone could afford. There was something egalitarian about it I really liked. When I bought something it was because I liked it not because it presented a money making opportunity.

Now that screenprints have become occasionally valuable like original art and people buy and sell them at more frequency and there is an opportunity for profit. While this sucks, I do understand it especially when it comes to certain artists and certain pieces of artwork. Additionally the internet means there is a wider audience for artists and if demand goes up they can make more money so its good for them even when its occasionally a bummer.

What really sucks to me though is raffles. While I like art, I don't need more pieces to throw in a portfolio that I will never hang or look at until I decide to cash in. As such I don't need to win something that I kind of like. And so the prospect of losing raffles priced at $20-$50 and even higher makes it more worth my time to just save my time and purchase the few pieces I know I would hang and treasure.

While you could make the argument that some people could never afford them at certain prices, I would argue that anyone who can throw $20 into a raffle for nothing is either phenomenally bad finance or doesn't ultimately care enough about a piece to begin with. Even something like a Jaws or a Stout Star Wars set can be had for less than the price of an expensive mountain bike. So its not that outside the realm to save for.

Most raffles seem to fall into the total range from $250-1000 making most pieces ultimately attainable. It really seems like there's a lot of people who just want things to have more things instead of having the things they like the most. I suspect this will be met with snark if the Facebook groups are anything to go by and so I will apologize for being an old crank who doesn't get how economics work or whatever dumb thing I said.

raffles have little do with people wanting to collect fudge for the sake of it. Id guess a huge percentage of people here and on FB/other forums have most of their collection in storage. people like having a "collection"

Most of the raffles are for sci-fi movies posters. Don’t let it get to you.

A doggy waffle - LOVE!

I hear man, I hate raffles to. Never sold a piece via a raffle and I never want to either. The word waffle is annoying! Never heard people call them razzles.

Razzles seems to be more used in the bobblehead/sports memorabilia groups I'm in. Same thing, just a different name to get around Facebook.

I think climate change is pretty depressing, but maybe I should be focusing on waffles more? I mean, if you can't think of anything more depressing...
