This topic is slightly different to my 'What do you want from the new Expresso Beans' one.

With this topic I'm hoping to see how the community would like the forums to evolve as we bring things more up to date.

I've alluded elsewhere to various plans floating around in my head. Changes to the New Users group, a time-out group for people misbehaving, a group with sales forum posting access that members automatically join after a probation period but can be taken out of.

I also think that we can probably rearrange the forums a bit to make them easier to negotiate. There may be ways to merge bits, move bits, etc. As well as make guides for new users on commonly asked questions. Maybe areas for the new users where some more established members could assist them in a safe space.

There is also the confusion with rules and guidelines that I found testing at times. I'd like us to have much clearer guidelines on what is considered acceptable behaviour, what the moderation team will do if these guidelines aren't met, etc. There should be a process that we all stick to more consistently. It would also make it far easier to take on other members into moderation roles as the site grows.

So in this thread I'm really just looking for ideas. Throw them out there. Are there forum features that you've seen elsewhere that you like? Things you've always wanted/hated about the EB forums?

As with the other thread we're not necessarily going to follow through with any of the suggestions here. Once its run a while I'll aggregate it to discuss with the other staff/board. We appreciate input though as I'm sure we all want the forums to thrive and be a happy place.

Oh, also a lot of artists hate this place! It'd be very nice if we could make the forums somewhere where the people who make the art we covet so much can happily interact.

Over to you lot..

(P.S. Yes, I already suspect where some of these suggestions will go. No dildocopters or I'm a slow learner's. :P )

a time-out group for people misbehaving
...name this group "The Hat Rack". You know...because it's for the "asshats".

While I'm at it...it'd be great to provide an environment where women will feel more welcomed. In my bag-makin' dayz I met a few women/members that didn't feel comfortable enough to participate. Of course, we all make our own decisions...I stuck it out regardless but eventually said drymount it; since the games became too tiring and not worth it. It's not so bad now...mostly because now I just get the silent treatment.

I know this was brought up elsewhere and being looked at, but a new Feedback system would be great. On another FB group I used to be in for toy collectors, they just had a list of members who sold and bought stuff - the list was the first post of the thread and every time a comment was made my another member to endorse (or give negative feedback) to a user who they bought from or sold to, the mods would update the +/- number next to their name.

It takes a lot of monitoring and you'd have to have some dialogue with people who posted negative feedback before you just started deducting points, but generally it worked well. It was easy to look up a name and see their "rating"

All the other stuff in your OP Inkling sounds good too - I definitely think a "sheparding" space for newbs would be helpful as well as behavior guidelines that were applied by mods.

A better feedback system is definitely something we could do. I'd hoped to install some kind of 'reputation' plugin for the forum but there don't seem to be any reliable ones out there for the latest version of the software. I had a karma mod on one of the other forums I ran that worked really well. We'll see what we can do. The monitored thread system sounds a lot of work. Ideally something automatic would be good.

Here are a couple of forum ideas I think maybe worthy of implementing:

1. Artist Only Forum - this has been asked for numerous times by artists, both officially and unofficially. A place for artists, similar to the way "gigposters" used to be.

2. Adults Only Forum - where members must confirm they are 18 or over prior to joining. Little if any moderation in this forum. A true "Almost Anything Goes" Forum. Providing this type of forum might help eliminate some of the "clutter" within the main forums.

Regarding Forum Moderation, we do have a set of rules buried somewhere in the Team or Authority Forum. Generally, it was/is a 5 strike policy, with escalating punishment for each infraction. Of course, the problem has always been that few, if any, Team Members are willing to enforce the policies, for various reasons. You can tell that from the 20 plus page threads for some of the "banned" Members. When dealing with a forum issue (and most any other issue regarding EB), I always ask myself whether or not the issue presented is in the "best interests" of Expressobeans.com. That usually "clarifies" the solution for me.

Can I get a link up here to the aforementioned guidelines? I know you can be banned for a) doxing a member b) Hamurabi style rulings dealing with bad trolling and or race/sex isms (*needs moar buried link)

I do not understand #2..like NOT Image
(and I am also wondering where the "razz" emoji ( : p ) went lol)

Also I vote that we keep the classic EB logo please.

Obviously, if you read the forums, there aren't too many "Hamurabi style rulings" or other type of moderation at present. Off the top of my head:

Fraud, where it is more obvious than not
Threats, against individuals or EB
Porn
Graphic Drug Use
Not complying with moderator request - this is the one that gets most people.

My perspective always has been and always will be, what's in the "best interests" of EB?

Both ideas have merit. The artists area is something that occurred to me. We could do a request to join forum for them.

The adult forum will still need some guidelines but it's doable and like you say may give those that need to somewhere to vent while keeping the atmosphere in the forums more civil.

My thoughts were more towards a simple list of guidelines that all members could access. We'd also have moderator guidelines and the ability to discuss things in private. I'd also really like to make more use of the moderator tools phpbb puts at our disposal. More use of the built in warning system, user notes, etc. This combined with a time-out group will help. I'm also thinking that changing the new user group transition may be interesting. With the autogroups function we can now transition users to different levels of access depending on age of account, post count, etc.

Understood and all sounds good. Previously, we were severely limited by our software. I'm elated that is no longer the case. I haven't had a chance to "look" at all the new tools you and the Tech Team have provided, but will over the next few days.
